1. Impressions of NYC:
Welcome to a city where entertainment is lined within each and every block; filled with museums, restaurants bars, comedy and much more. Exhilaration, a feeling of excitement happiness or elation. A feeling that warms the body as you walk through a city surrounded with bright lights, street dancers, horns blaring and thousands of people scurrying to their various destinations.
Manhattan, NY is the place to which you can come for almost anything. You can almost never predict how your day will go if spent in the city; Who you will meet or where you'll end up.

2. Queens
Queens;one of New York's Five boroughs, located on the on the western end of long island and one of the largest of the five boroughs. Queens is compiled of small businesses and is prominent for its size, population and its diversity. You'd be amazed that queens is actually the fourth largest independent cities housing two of the largest Airports John K Kennedy and Laguardia, and home to the architecture of the late great Robert Moses. Moses being the creator of highways all across Queens county.
I have been a resident of Queens for 20 years. Its quite a shame that we know so little about the areas that surround us historically. Before today's excursion i have to admit, I was totally oblivious to the sites right here in my backyard. Although Brooklyn and manhattatan have the reputation of being the leading places to go in NYC, It was amazing to me to actually be able to visualize Queens on the rise. Astoria once named Hallets cove after its first owner and Long Island city; located on the western end of queens gains momentum today. (Russo &Cullinan, 2014, p.223) Both Astoria and Long Island city has made tremendous progress over the past couple decades. Astoria became prominent during the 1900's for film making and housing Paramount studios that was once known as Famous Players-Lansky Corporation. (Russo &Cullinan, 2014, p.223) |
Long Island City came from a merger of the village of Astoria and the hamlets of Ravenswod, Hunters Point, Blissville, Sunnyside, dutch kills, Steinway, Bowery Bay and Middleton. (Russo &Cullinan, 2014, p.225)
With a quite extensive history; The place of prostitution, drugs and graffiti made a new now has the highest concentration of art galleries, art institutions and studio spaces of any neighborhood in NYC (Russo &Cullinan,2014, p.225)
The River was a fanatic for scenery and tranquil settings; It is the norm to travel some distance for a picnic on a day off . Today was the first day out of all of my years have I found a place close to home to go for a picnic with my loved ones.
after walking along the river we came across the gantry plaza state park. this is a site that was once used for the transfer of cargo from ships to trains on Long Island (Russo &Cullinan, 2014, p.226)

A quick pit stop to the Museum of the moving image; a museum located within Astoria captures the art and history of movie making. Inside we got to see the process of movie making, how sound effects were added, how they did such bizarre things like cut of the head of a real life person and placing it on the head of a whole nother species. It's quite fantastic, the art of animation and how a cartoonist can bring to life a creation with just a pen, paper and an animation application.
3. Brooklyn
4.Chelsea & The Village
|
Bose art begin with preservation of New York. Fifth avenue used to be filled with mansions that were torn down for the building of Fao Schwartz and other retail stores. In the 80s you wouldn't normally go to Chelsea for art galleries;People went to Soho. Thousands of warehouses opened and turned into art galleries. (Russo &Cullinan, 2014, p.83) Where the rich come gallery shopping there are free wine giveaways. The art is ridiculously unique and over priced. (Russo &Cullinan, 2014, p.83) On today's excursion, the two galleries that struck me were: Mike Weiss gallery by Artist Tom Fruin On display is the Color study; and art exhibition and Jack Shainman gallery by Artist Nick Cave On view at 524 West 24th street is a compilation of art called Rescue. This art collection comprises sculptures that incorporate found ceramic dogs sitting on furniture with elaborate grottos or dreamlike dens. . These dogs are associated with loyalty, class, breed, commitment and protection. This story stems from the life of a single pup that was rescued from death, the dogs after become benevolent guardians with spotlight focused on the lost and forgotten. This gallery spoke to me because I myself have an animal. And today honestly the pieces spoke to me based off of what I see going on in the world today. It's almost as if pets are being treated better than actual human beings. Being adopted into a home after some have had the unlucky bout are receiving love. && if they're lucky and their owners a millionaire $20 million dollars they couldn't handle if they were of the human species |
The Merchants House
Historic house 90th street
House built in 1832 outside federal design and moved into in 1890. (Russo &Cullinan, 2014, p.99)Moved in with 7 kids and one on the way. All seven lived full term except for one that died at the age of 48. The father had a job of importing metal goods. He could almost retire by the 55. Family lived with four live in servants and day hired work to take care of the horses and the stable. She would entertain friends or family right in her room. She would give birth in the same room. The extra bed was for her sister or for a sick child. She may even hire a nurse for the day to help her with the child. They took sponge baths right in the room or they would stand and have someone. Pour the water on them like a modern day shower. Seabourd Jackwell spent more of him outside of home. A fun fact is beds have never been moved
Gertrude as well as her father died in the same bed. (Russo &Cullinan, 2014, p.100)People would only die in hospitals if they were less fortunate. Care done at home. She was impoverished at the time after living off a $100000 settlement received by her father
After she died George Techman came to analyze the house for sales or find out what to do with the house; But he realized it was a time capsule from the 80s.
fun fact
It is believed that Gertrude is still there in spirit.
All servants usually from Ireland because of hardship in Ireland. There were factories just open. Girls had a choice of where they wanted to work but they had to provide everything for themselves. They were provided with clothes/food medical services. But there usually was a religious imbalance. They thought German girls were bad girls; stereotypically speaking. They had really long hours even before and after their family went to sleep with one afternoon off which they probably spent at church. But they really didn't have their freedom.
